Greater Peoria Mass Transit District (CityLink)
Announces Record Breaking Year of Ridership

This past fiscal year which ended June 30, 2009 showed the highest ridership since the inception of the district in 1970. In the fiscal year 2009 Greater Peoria Mass Transit District (CityLink) experienced record setting ridership levels on its fixed route service. There were 3,026,541 passenger trips made between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

This figure represents a 24.9% increase over the 2,435,031 passenger trips recorded in the fiscal year 2008. Comparing ridership in fiscal year 2005 of 2,061,074 to the fiscal year 2009 figure there was a 46.8% increase in passenger trips.

Demand response Americans with Disability Act (ADA) paratransit ridership for the same period was 118,148. Paratransit ridership in fiscal year 2008 was 118,122.

This ridership has been a response from the community who faced unusually high gas prices and the need to economize.  While the increase in ridership was phenomenal by itself passengers also helped reduce carbon emissions. Just one person switching to public transit reduces daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds or more than 4,800 pounds a year.  Statistics from American Public Transportation Association (APTA) states that households near public transit drive an average of 4,400 fewer miles than households with no access to public transit.  This equates to an individual household reduction of 223 gallons of gas per year.
