CityLink Donates Bus to Illinois Central College for Educational Purposes

The Greater Peoria Mass Transit District (CityLink) officially donated a 35-foot Gillig diesel bus to the Diesel Powered Equipment Technology (DPET) program at Illinois Central College during a press conference on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.

Bus 1903 was initially placed into service in March 2004, and it was removed from CityLink’s active fleet in fall 2017.  The bus exceeded the average useful life expectancy of 12 years for a public transportation bus.  This number is dictated by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

“We are pleased to donate one of our inactive buses to the DPET program at Illinois Central College.  This donation is an addition to our strong partnership with ICC that will help in fostering the education of local students,” said CityLink General Manager Doug Roelfs.  “Our Director of Maintenance, Mike Brockway, has been working diligently with ICC on this effort for the last six months.  It is our hope that having a transit bus available for hands-on learning at a local college will help in securing CityLink and other public transportation agencies with future well-trained employees,” continued Roelfs.

“ICC is honored to accept CityLink’s generous donation and is grateful for their continued partnership with the College in growing the next generation of diesel service technicians,” said ICC President Dr. Sheila Quirk-Bailey. “Industry partnerships such as this are crucial in supporting our goal of supplying skilled employees to the regional workforce. The donation of this bus will provide our students the exposure to a segment of industry that they previously may have never considered.”

ICC plans to incorporate the bus into the curriculum for DPET class during the current Spring Semester.  More information on the DPET program is available
